Seven Ethiopian armed groups, including the TPLF and the Oromo Liberation Army, announced on Sunday the formation of an alliance to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The groups stated their intention to form an inclusive transitional government.
What changed
Earlier, on September 23, 2026, Ethiopian Airlines had already suspended flights to Mekelle, Aksum and Shire after Tigray forces seized Mekelle Airport from federal police. The seizure followed the TPLF's announcement of an alliance with six armed groups to overthrow the federal government.
Who's affected
In Tigray, internet and telephone services are disrupted; the state operator Ethio Telecom's services are completely shut down, while the private operator Safaricom continues to operate. Young men are leaving for Addis Ababa, fearing forced mobilization; some say they paid bribes for release after being detained by local authorities.
