What happened
The Saudi-led coalition said on Thursday that it intercepted six ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis toward Taif and Yanbu. A Greek Patriot air defense system shot down a ballistic missile and a drone near Yanbu, a Greek security source told Reuters. The Houthis did not immediately claim responsibility.
The Houthi advance along the Red Sea coast led to the capture of the port of Mokha and Mayun Island, completing their control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. On Tuesday, government forces said they captured Mount Karafan in Taiz, killing five Houthis and wounding 20.
What changed
Earlier, the Houthis launched a broad offensive west of Taiz, trying to cut the road connecting Taiz to al-Makha. Later they captured the entire Red Sea coast and reached the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Yemen's government carried out at least 15 airstrikes on the Houthis in Taiz and Hodeidah on Friday. The coalition now reports intercepting six missiles over Taif and Yanbu.
Who's affected
The fighting affected the provinces of Taiz and Hodeidah, as well as coastal areas of the Red Sea. According to the IOM, 75,000 people have been displaced in Taiz. Saudi Arabia temporarily closed the East-West oil pipeline after a drone attack.
