What happened
Russian strikes this summer destroyed more than 13 million books in Ukraine, with damage of at least $39.3 million. In the August 1 attack on the Ranok publishing house warehouse in Kharkiv alone, the fire lasted almost a week and destroyed 8 million books, including 620,000 textbooks.
Around the same time, Ukraine launched its largest drone strike on Moscow since the war began, hitting oil industry and logistics facilities. Russian air defense forces claimed to have destroyed more than 1,600 drones across the country since Saturday, 450 of which were headed for Moscow; Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the attack an unprecedented attempt to disrupt the State Duma elections.
Debris from a Ukrainian drone shot down by Russian air defense systems fell on the roof of the Sadovod market in Moscow on September 20, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished. The shopping complex temporarily suspended operations; Sadovod is one of Moscow's largest wholesale and retail centers, where many Azerbaijanis work.
Why it matters
Ukraine's Minister of Culture called the strikes on book warehouses a deliberate policy aimed at undermining the country's cultural resilience. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strikes on a train carrying European officials 'Putin's terror knocking on the doors of the EU and NATO.' Russia has increased the intensity of ballistic missile attacks: Kyiv has only four minutes of warning, and almost 60 civilians were killed in the first 10 days of July.
What changed
Earlier in September, Russian strikes on Kyiv killed at least 12 people and wounded 20. On September 13, Russian drones struck the Yahodyn border crossing and the Kyiv–Warsaw train near the Polish border. On September 4, a Russian drone hit the SBU headquarters in Kyiv, wounding nine people.
