According to Russian air defense forces, more than 1600 drones had been destroyed across the country since Saturday, 450 of them heading for Moscow; some reached the territory of an oil refinery in the capital. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that a total of 1600 drones attacked, 450 of which were shot down on approach to the capital, and called the attack unprecedented.

Context

On September 13, Russian drones attacked a Ukrainian train carrying European officials near the border with Poland, and on September 8 a drone entered Moldovan airspace as President Zelensky's plane was preparing for departure. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strikes 'Putin's terror knocking on the doors of the EU and NATO'.

What changed

An internal archive shows that Ukraine's long-range drone campaign had previously led to mass airport closures in Russia: in August, Osprey Flight Solutions recorded 993 temporary closures, an average of 32 per day. FP-2 drone operators reported that medium-range drones hit targets up to 700 kilometers inside Russia, including air defense systems, troop concentrations, and logistics centers. The current attack on Moscow was the largest since the war began.

Who's affected

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported 18 wounded in the capital after an attack of 157 drones and 16 missiles. Russian strikes on Kyiv damaged residential buildings, public buildings, and infrastructure facilities; search and rescue operations continued there.
