Before retiring to the deliberation room, all defendants made final statements. All eight defendants were sentenced to four years of imprisonment, replaced by two years of probation; the confiscation of property was cancelled.
Why it matters
The case relates to a letter signed by 75 politicians and public figures who called for early presidential elections. The letter, published on February 9, argued that the term of President Sadyr Japarov is unclear because he was elected under the previous constitution, which provided for a longer term. The regular presidential election is scheduled for January of next year. The main defendant Kamchybek Tashiev headed the State Committee for National Security until February 10, 2026, and was considered the second most influential official in the country.
What changed
In June, the Pervomaisky District Court lifted the secrecy classification from the case materials, ruling that further hearings from June 15 would be open. After the appeal, the court excluded the article on attempted violent seizure of power, and the new classification does not provide for confiscation of property.
