Iranian media report explosions on the coast amid an escalation of strikes on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The exchange of strikes between the US and Iran has led to casualties and a jump in oil prices.

What happened
The IRGC announced it was preparing strikes on oil tankers in the ports and anchorages of Kuwait and Bahrain and called on crews to leave the vessels immediately. The threat was described as a response to US military actions against Iranian oil tankers. Senior Iranian security official Mohsen Rezai said Tehran will declare a restricted zone near the Strait of Hormuz and announce a new shipping route agreed with Oman in the coming days. Iran also said it fired a Qassem Basir ballistic missile at US warships near the Strait of Hormuz, which avoided being hit.
Why it matters
Brent crude exceeded $100 per barrel for the first time since July. At least one sailor died and another is missing. As of September 7, 42 tankers were waiting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, including 18 carrying oil with a total capacity of 1.76 million cubic meters; the attacks raised the risk of a major oil spill in the Persian Gulf. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Iran will lose tankers every time it tries to strike US Navy ships.
What changed
Earlier, American forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on August 30. On September 8, the US struck five Iranian oil tankers, and Iran attacked Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan.
Who's affected
Oil tankers in the ports and anchorages of Kuwait and Bahrain were under threat of IRGC strikes. American warships in the Strait of Hormuz became targets of Iranian ballistic missiles. Jordanian authorities said most of the 18 ballistic missiles fired at American facilities were intercepted and there were no deaths.
