What happened
The IAEA reports that North Korea has built a new two-story uranium enrichment plant at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex. The building can house up to 28 cascades of centrifuges used to enrich uranium. Pyongyang has also begun operating an expanded annex at another enrichment facility.
Why it matters
Grossi called the continued production of weapons materials in the DPRK a matter of serious concern. On Iran, the agency called the lack of information about nuclear material and access to facilities a proliferation problem. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman warned that Tehran would take “necessary measures” if Western powers continue to push the resolution.
What changed
It was previously reported that the United States intended to raise the issue of Iran's nuclear program at the UN Security Council and to present a resolution at the IAEA Board of Governors session in Vienna. Now France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States are seeking to refer Iran's file to the UN Security Council for the first time in two decades.
Who's affected
Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after U.S. and Israeli strikes in June 2025 and has still not provided access to the bombed facilities. North Korea continues work at the Yongbyon nuclear complex.
Earlier
- Western allies had warned that IT specialists from the DPRK are using artificial intelligence to obtain remote work and direct income to Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.
- The IAEA had reported that the nuclear reactor in Deir ez-Zor, built by North Korea, was configured to produce fissile material suitable for nuclear weapons.
