- Canada on Tuesday imposed retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on about 700 American goods worth around $20 billion, doubling duties on steel and aluminum to 50 percent.
- Trump threatened to ban Bombardier sales in the United States if the company does not move production to America, and said more than half of its revenue comes from American buyers.
- Trump said Canada's economy could collapse under Prime Minister Mark Carney; Carney earlier said negotiations with the United States had reached an impasse but left the door open for dialogue.
What changed
Before the new decision, the United States had already imposed 50 percent tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment. Canada in response promised mirror measures from September 8, and Prime Minister Carney spoke of "dollar-for-dollar" retaliatory tariffs. The new orders additionally introduce a direct import ban from September 29 and change the scope of the 50 percent tariffs from September 15.
Who's affected
Trump's new restrictions affect Canadian motorcycles, dairy products and alcohol. In addition, Trump said on Monday that Bombardier will no longer be able to sell aircraft in the United States unless it begins producing them on American soil, and accused the company of treating America like a "piggy bank"; he also said more than half of Bombardier's revenue comes from American buyers.
What to watch
From September 15, the scope of the 50 percent additional tariffs on Canadian automobiles and alcohol will change, and from September 29 a ban on imports of certain Canadian motorcycles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages will take effect.
Context
Trump also attacked Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media, claiming that Canadian leaders who declared him an "enemy" made a politically "very bad" choice and would suffer. He wrote that Canada's economy could collapse under Carney. Carney earlier said negotiations with the United States continued "until they ultimately reached an impasse" and left the door open for renewed dialogue.
What's Next
From September 15, the scope of the 50 percent additional tariffs on Canadian automobiles and alcohol will change, and from September 29 a ban on imports of certain Canadian motorcycles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages will take effect.
