Uzbekistan: Oversight of First Nuclear Power Plant, Local Content, and Coordination with Kazakhstan

What happened
The Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan (Uzatom), in a September 4 report, proposed creating a joint engineering enterprise with a foreign partner. The enterprise will inspect the plant's design and equipment and oversee construction quality at the site in Jizzakh Region. Potential foreign participants and the timeline for setting up the enterprise were not named.
The Government of Uzbekistan intends to increase the share of local production in the NPP project in Jizzakh Region from 21% to at least 30%. A 200-hectare industrial zone is planned in Forish District to accommodate at least 100 joint ventures.
Why it matters
Construction of the NPP in Jizzakh Region began on June 4, and the project remains dependent on the Russian contractor Atomstroyexport. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are entering nuclear power almost simultaneously: Uzbekistan is building its first plant, while Kazakhstan is planning at least three.
