Yemen's internationally recognized government has announced a counteroffensive against the Houthis and its intention to retake the capital Sanaa. What happened
On Thursday, the Houthis launched a broad offensive west of Taiz province, trying to cut the road connecting Taiz with Mocha. According to government officials, their forces regained control of some areas previously captured by the Houthis. At least 18 Houthis and 13 government servicemen were killed in these battles. Since Thursday, at least 81 fighters have been killed in clashes in Taiz and coastal areas of the Red Sea; both sides are sending reinforcements.
Why it matters
The IMF predicts that escalation of the conflict in Yemen could disrupt oil shipments through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through which about 6.2 million barrels of oil pass daily. The Houthis earlier declared a new naval blockade of Saudi Arabia's shipping, threatening a return to full-scale war. Saudi Arabia is preparing to resume military action against the Houthis after several weeks of attacks on hospitals, ships, airports and oil facilities.
Who's affected
A Houthi attack on the southern Saudi province of Najran injured 11 civilians, including a 4-year-old child. The Houthis also attacked Mocha and Marib, killing at least seven people, including three soldiers.
