Kazakhstan targets 128.9 million tonnes coal output as reserves last 300 years

Kazakhstan plans to produce approximately 128.9 million tonnes of coal in 2026, according to Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov. The country aims to increase coal exports while ensuring stable domestic supply. This comes as Kazakhstan's coal reserves are estimated to last over 300 years.
Coal Production and Export
Kazakhstan's coal production reached approximately 115.9 million tonnes in 2025, marking a 7% increase from 2024, according to Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov. Of this, 85.9 million tonnes were used domestically, while 30 million tonnes were exported. Major export destinations include Russia, Poland, Uzbekistan, Turkey, India, and Malaysia. The government plans to boost production to 128.9 million tonnes in 2026.
Coal Reserves and Regions
Kazakhstan ranks 10th globally in coal reserves, with an estimated 33.6 billion tonnes, enough to last over 300 years at current extraction rates. Key coal deposits are located in Central Kazakhstan, including the Karaganda and Turgay basins, and in the northeast, such as the Ekibastuz and Maikuben basins. These reserves are critical for the country's energy security, as highlighted by Akkenzhenov.
What's Next
Kazakhstan's government is expected to finalize plans for increasing coal production by the end of the year. It remains uncertain how global market conditions will affect these plans.
