Kazakhstan Energy Ministry rules out sharp fuel price hike as moratorium ends

Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Energy, Sungat Yesimkhanov, stated that a sharp increase in fuel prices is not expected following the end of the price moratorium on April 1, 2026. He noted that while gradual price increases are possible, they will not be significant. This comes as neighboring countries experience higher fuel costs.
Fuel Price Moratorium Ends
The moratorium on fuel price increases in Kazakhstan, which began on October 16, 2025, ended on April 1, 2026. This measure had kept the prices of AI-92 gasoline and diesel stable. Vice Minister Sungat Yesimkhanov assured that the end of the moratorium will not lead to a sharp price hike, although a gradual increase is possible. The Ministry of Energy, alongside other government bodies, continues to monitor the market to prevent anti-competitive practices.
Regional Price Comparison
Fuel prices in Kazakhstan remain lower compared to neighboring countries, according to Yesimkhanov. Some gas stations have already increased prices to 240 tenge per liter, as reported by Kaktus Media. Despite this, the Ministry of Energy expects only moderate increases, emphasizing that market conditions and regional price disparities will influence future adjustments.
What's Next
The Ministry of Energy will continue to oversee the fuel market to ensure fair pricing. It remains uncertain how regional economic factors will impact Kazakhstan's fuel prices in the coming months.
