What happened
The World Food Programme reported that a record number of people in government-controlled areas of Yemen are unable to meet their food needs. According to a UN assessment dated September 22, fighting in Taiz governorate since mid-September has displaced more than 230,000 people, and the Houthi offensive has led to road closures and disrupted port operations. The escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi group is the most serious since the 2022 truce.
Why it matters
The escalation has contributed to oil prices rising to $110 per barrel on September 15 — the highest level in recent months. UNHCR forecasts that up to 10,000 refugees from Yemen may arrive in Djibouti, and the number of internally displaced people may rise to more than 230,000. UNHCR's operation in Yemen is only 18% funded in 2026, and Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh said sector funding has reached 17% of needs.
Who's affected
The UN reports that Taiz remains the epicenter of the crisis: it accounts for more than 60% of all displacement cases. UNICEF previously estimated that 3.2 million children in Yemen are out of school, and displaced families struggle to afford basic nutrition. In the second quarter of 2026, 62 cases of the Houthis recruiting children aged 16 and older were documented.
