Nepal: Avalanche Claims 15 Lives, Landslides and Floods Continue
An avalanche on Mount Himlung Himal in Nepal on September 27 killed 15 people, with one worker still missing. At the same time, the country continues to deal with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides that earlier killed more than 1450 people and severely hit tourism.

What happened
Officials said the death toll had reached 15, one high-altitude worker remains unaccounted for, and search teams are continuing their work. According to earlier reports, between 10 and 14 people were considered missing; bad weather prevented helicopters from reaching the summit, and a ground rescue operation was impossible.
At the same time, a new wave of landslides and heavy rains hit Nepal: about 30 people died, more than 1900 families were affected, and over 240 homes were damaged. Hundreds of tourists on the Annapurna route were evacuated by helicopter or forced to cut short their trek. A separate landslide in Palpa district killed at least one person and left two others missing, while flooding in Parbat affected about 80 homes.
Why it matters
The catastrophic floods hit the tourism sector, which accounts for almost 8 percent of Nepal's GDP and employs more than 1 million people. Booking cancellations affected even areas not impacted by the floods.

According to archival reports, at the end of August the death toll from landslides and floods in Nepal and Tibet stood at 623, with 2980 people listed as missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 1451 dead and 5745 missing.
