Iran issued the US a five-day ultimatum over the Strait of Hormuz
Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the US has five days to comply with Tehran’s conditions for opening the strait. The conditions were previously conveyed through Qatar and included lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports. Attacks on ships occurred in the strait, and the US extended sanctions against Iran.

Earlier, Tehran conveyed to the White House through Qatari mediators its conditions for ending the war: an end to the war on all fronts, unfreezing Iranian assets, and lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports. The IRGC said the US and Israel must recognize the region’s freedom from their “vile and criminal presence”.
On September 18, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a Togo-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC said the vessel attempted an illegal passage through the strait. US President Donald Trump said he was close to a decision to destroy Iran.
What changed
On September 19, US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Russia and Iran Sanctions Act of 2026, extending existing US sanctions against Iran. President Masoud Pezeshkian, in his address to the UN, rejected the threat of destruction from the US and left open the possibility of a diplomatic settlement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that a deal with Iran would require lengthy efforts and that military options remain on the table.
Why it matters
Since February 28, 2026, traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been declining due to attacks on commercial vessels. In April, traffic in the strait was below 10% of normal volume despite a ceasefire, and global oil supplies fell by 20%.
Who's affected
A Togo-flagged tanker was damaged in the strait, as was another vessel struck by debris from an unknown projectile. The IRGC named the US and Israel as parties whose presence in the region must be ended.
