NATO fighter jet shoots down suspected Russian drone over Lithuania
On September 15, a NATO fighter jet shot down a suspected Russian drone that entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. In those same days, Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv and the Odesa, Volyn, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions of Ukraine, with reports of deaths and injuries.

What happened
An Italian fighter jet operating as part of NATO shot down a suspected Russian drone in Lithuanian airspace on September 15; the drone entered from Belarus and was downed near the settlement of Pratkūnai, north of Kaunas. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the incident part of a pattern of aggression against Europe.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the attacks “a knock on the doors of the EU and NATO” and called for full sanctions against Russia. On September 11, a Russian drone strike on Pavlohrad killed at least five people and wounded dozens. On September 4, a Russian drone hit the central SBU building in Kyiv, wounding nine people; President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the drone was aimed directly at the office of SBU head Oleksandr Poklad, who was not there at the time.
Why it matters
After the Pavlohrad strike, Ukraine's foreign minister called on allies to provide more air defense assets. In early September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the Russian strikes as “Russian terror” and called on allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses.
What changed
In early September, Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed at least 12 people and wounded 20–21. On September 15, one person was killed and seven were hospitalized in an attack on Kyiv. The September 15 attacks came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said Moscow and Kyiv had agreed not to strike each other's energy infrastructure.
