In the same period, the IRGC claimed strikes on two U.S. warships and eight tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. attacks on five Iranian tankers. Earlier, the IRGC announced the capture of a U.S. underwater drone at the entrance to the strait: according to the IRGC, the Dive-LD entered U.S. Navy service in 2025, and the operation took place at dawn on September 8, 2026. CENTCOM, for its part, reported that over 60 days of the blockade it changed the routes of 100 merchant vessels and that no vessel crossed the blockade without permission from U.S. forces.
Why it matters
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical corridor for global energy supplies. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, about 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products passed through it daily in 2025 — nearly $600 billion in energy trade per year. About 20% of global LNG is also shipped through the strait, mainly from Qatar. Kpler data shows that amid the war between Iran and the U.S., which began on February 28, daily traffic through the strait fell to seven vessels compared with an average of 15 over the previous 10 days.
Who's affected
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened to shipping only after the U.S. ends its blockade of Iranian ports and attacks on the Islamic Republic. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the strait is under Iranian control and is closed to protect national security. The parties' positions on control of the strait differ: Iran says it is under its control, while CENTCOM states that no vessel crossed the U.S. blockade without permission.
