Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Gaza: new casualties and destruction
In the past 24 hours, Israeli strikes on southeastern Lebanon killed five people and wounded 37. Lebanon's Ministry of Health reported that in the past 24 hours Israeli strikes on the southeast of the country killed five people and wounded 37. The strikes hit targets in the Wadi al-Suluki and Wadi al-Hujeir valleys, as well as near the town of Al-Mansouri. In Gaza, civil defense crews recovered the remains of 55 Palestinians from the rubble of the Malka family home in the Zeitoun neighborhood, destroyed by an Israeli airstrike on November 19, 2023; the operation ended on Saturday after 72 hours of searching for more than 60 victims.
Why it matters
Save the Children published data showing that since March an average of seven children are killed daily in Lebanon. The organization documented at least 257 child deaths and 1,039 injuries over a six-month period, and more than 348,800 people remain displaced in southern Lebanon. UNICEF reported that Israeli strikes in Gaza killed four children aged 2 to 16, seriously damaged a UN partner warehouse, and destroyed therapeutic food supplies worth more than $770,000 intended for over 45,000 children, pregnant and breastfeeding women. Also seriously damaged were a water intake and desalination plant in Deir al-Balah, which supplied water to more than 4,000 people.
