Bangladesh has received an invitation to join the 'Mecca Pact' — a defense agreement signed on August 7, 2026, by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir announced this and said that Dhaka views the offer positively.
The first meeting of the strategic political and defense committee, comprising the foreign ministers, defense ministers, and chiefs of general staff of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, is scheduled for August 31 in Istanbul. This is the first meeting since the signing of the Mecca joint defense agreement earlier this month. Joint defense, defense industry cooperation, and counterterrorism were discussed at the meeting.
Context
The Mecca Agreement was signed on August 7, 2026 in Mecca by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The collective defense clause provides that an armed attack on one party is considered an attack on all three. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that the pact is not directed against any country and is based on Article 51 of the UN Charter. He also stressed that the agreement is open to other 'brotherly countries'.
