The Institute for the Study of War has summed up August results: Russian forces occupied about 90.35 square kilometers, while Ukrainian counteroffensive operations regained at least 129.8 square kilometers. Russian army losses totaled 42,020 killed and wounded. The month also saw Russian Defense Ministry claims of capturing three villages and a drone strike on a police headquarters in Zhytomyr.

What happened
On August 29, Russia's Defense Ministry announced the capture of three villages — Khrapovshchyna in Sumy Oblast, Novoandriivka and Rubizhne in Donetsk Oblast. Ukraine did not comment on these claims.
On August 19, Russian military drones attacked Zhytomyr Oblast at 20:32, striking the national police headquarters building with Banderol-type jet drones. Two police officers were killed and at least 10 people were wounded; the strike caused a fire on the fourth floor and roof of the building.
Why it matters
The offensive significantly lags behind the Kremlin's goal of capturing all of Donbas by autumn, ISW notes. The Economist, citing sources close to the Kremlin, reported that Putin has chosen further escalation of the war and is preparing to send another 300,000–400,000 people to the front. One of the publication's sources relayed Putin's words: "They will hang me."
