Dagestan launches hepatitis A vaccination amid water contamination
Medical teams in Dagestan have initiated hepatitis A vaccinations following water contamination. The vaccinations target flood-affected areas, as stated by Russian Health Ministry aide Alexey Kuznetsov. This comes even as the region grapples with widespread infrastructure damage from recent floods.
Flood Impact in the Caucasus
In late March, severe flooding affected multiple regions in the North Caucasus, extending beyond Dagestan. In Chechnya, nearly 2,000 homes were flooded and 17 bridges were damaged, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency. In North Ossetia, a road section between two villages was washed away, while Ingushetia experienced power outages.
Water Contamination and Health Response
The flooding led to contamination of drinking water, resulting in numerous cases of food poisoning. In Makhachkala, three main food centers were flooded, leaving 65,000 subscribers without electricity. Emergency hepatitis A vaccinations are being conducted to prevent further health issues in the affected regions.
