Kazakhstan repairs Shoptikol dam breach as 230 personnel mobilized

A breach occurred at the Shoptikol dam in Akmola Region, Kazakhstan, on April 5. Emergency services have mobilized 230 personnel and 56 units of equipment to manage the situation. The threat of flooding to the nearby village of Sabyndy has been eliminated.
Emergency Response
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations has deployed approximately 230 personnel and 56 units of equipment to address the breach at the Shoptikol dam. The dam, located 2 km north of Sabyndy village, failed due to the influx of meltwater. Local authorities, including the regional police and road services, are involved in the operation, which includes reinforcing the dam and diverting water.
Infrastructure Impact
The breach has affected the Astana-Korgalzhyn highway, with water crossing the road at the 75th kilometer, according to KazAvtoZhol. However, the road remains intact, and measures are in place to prevent water overflow onto the carriageway. Efforts include raising the road level and using 50,000 tons of inert material to manage water flow.
What's Next
Authorities will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of local infrastructure. It remains uncertain how long repairs will take and if further breaches could occur.
