7Key points
- Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi announced the start of a major military operation against the Houthis to retake territories under their control.
- The Houthis said they launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco facilities in Riyadh and Khurais; Saudi Arabia did not confirm the attacks.
- Yemeni armed forces reported 1,540 Houthis killed or wounded in 24 hours; on Saturday the army closed the al-Huban crossing in Taiz.
- The fighting has forced nearly 150,000 people from their homes on the southwestern coast, and more than 230,000 in Taiz province since mid-September.
- A record number of people in government-controlled areas of Yemen are unable to meet their food needs.
What happened
On 3 October, Saudi Arabia intercepted three ballistic missiles aimed at southern parts of the country; debris from one missile fell in Asir province, wounding a resident in Ahad Rafidah governorate. Yemeni armed forces reported 474 attacks in 24 hours, killing or wounding 1,540 Houthis; most casualties were in Taiz province, where operations halted a Houthi offensive. On Saturday, the army closed the al-Huban crossing, which connects Houthi-held al-Huban with the government-controlled city of Taiz, for security reasons.
Why it matters
The renewed conflict has already displaced nearly 150,000 people on the southwestern coast, disrupted markets and restricted humanitarian access. In Taiz province, more than 230,000 people have been displaced since mid-September; roads and ports are closed, and thousands of people in temporary camps are without aid. The escalation contributed to rising oil prices: on 15 September they reached $110 per barrel, and Saudi Arabia temporarily halted a key oil pipeline after a drone attack. The World Food Programme reported that a record number of people in government-controlled areas are unable to meet their food needs, and the escalation is the most serious since the 2022 truce.
Who's affected
Families from Al-Khawkhah fled their homes to escape the Houthi offensive and took refuge in Mukalla. The Houthi advance allowed them to gain control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. In Saudi Arabia, a resident of Ahad Rafidah governorate was wounded by debris from an intercepted missile.
