What happened

In the morning on Thursday, a Russian drone hit School No. 12 in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district. There were 104 children and 60 staff inside; all took shelter in an underground shelter after the air alert, and the drone's warhead did not detonate, so there were no casualties. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the children and staff were in shelters when the drone struck the building; no casualties were immediately reported. Two more drones hit the bridge connecting eastern and western Kyiv, halting the metro and ground public transport.

Overnight into September 30, Russian strikes on Ukraine killed five people, including one child, and injured 14, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The child's body was found under the rubble of a destroyed private house in Vyshhorod, Kyiv region; three people — a man, a woman, and a child — were pulled out alive. Ukraine's Air Force Command reported that air defenses shot down five ballistic missiles and 155 drones. The attacks affected Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, Rivne, and Zhytomyr regions, causing water and electricity disruptions.

Why it matters

The claim about Belarusian relays concerns western regions of Ukraine and the border with Poland: the devices boost the signal of drones heading to those areas. The attacks on Kyiv are accompanied by a halt of the metro and ground transport due to bridge damage. Amid the strikes, the UK announced 31 new sanctions against Russia.

Who's affected

The strikes affected Kyiv, Kyiv region, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, Rivne, Zhytomyr regions, and Kharkiv. In Kharkiv, at least 35 people were injured, including 10 children, and an Azerbaijani citizen was killed. In Kyiv on September 25, a drone hit a 25-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring nine.

Earlier

  • On September 13, a Russian drone struck the Yahodyn border crossing and the Kyiv-Warsaw train in Volyn region.
