Key points

  • The avalanche occurred on 27 September on the 7126-meter Mount Himlung Himal; 15 Nepali workers were killed and one remains missing.
  • The workers were setting up tents and securing ropes at the base camp ahead of the arrival of foreign climbers, who had not yet arrived.
  • Rescuers pulled eight bodies from the snow on Thursday, after seven earlier this week.
  • Meanwhile, landslides and heavy rains in Nepal claimed around 30 lives, and hundreds of tourists on the Annapurna route were evacuated.

What happened

It swept over the base camp, where Nepali workers were setting up tents and securing ropes ahead of the arrival of foreign climbers. The foreign climbers had not yet arrived at the camp. One worker at high altitude has still not been found. On Thursday, rescuers pulled eight bodies from the snow, after seven earlier this week. Bad weather prevented helicopters and ground teams from reaching the site; search operations are continuing.

Why it matters

Nepal's tourism sector, which accounts for nearly 8 percent of GDP and more than 1 million jobs, had already been hit by the August floods: foreign tourists cancelled bookings en masse at the start of the peak season. Even areas not affected by the floods felt the downturn.

What changed

As of 29 August, the death toll from floods and landslides in Nepal and Tibet stood at at least 623 people, with another 2980 listed as missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority later reported 1451 dead and 5745 missing in the flood.

Who's affected

The avalanche directly killed Nepali workers and support personnel preparing routes for tourist climbers. A separate wave of landslides and rains affected more than 1900 families and damaged over 240 homes in Nepal. In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, floods and landslides killed at least 56 people, and another 12 died in Nepal.
