Ethiopian government forces and allied Tigrayan fighters captured the strategic town of Alamata, a significant advance in the renewed fighting. Clashes spread to the Amhara and Afar regions, and seven armed groups had earlier announced an alliance to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Tigray forces took control of airports in Mekelle, Aksum and Shire. Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to the region after the airports were seized. Internet and phone service was disrupted in Tigray. Services of the state-owned operator Ethio Telecom were completely shut down, while the private operator Safaricom continued to operate.
Why it matters
Ethiopia's chief of staff, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, accused Sudan and Egypt of supporting armed groups fighting federal troops. He also accused Eritrea of financing and supporting armed groups in order to weaken Ethiopia. Sudan's military rejected the accusations as baseless, and Eritrea rejected the accusations.
What changed
On September 20, seven armed groups announced the formation of an alliance to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. On September 23, Tigray forces took control of Mekelle airport from federal police, after which Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to Mekelle, Aksum and Shire. In 2026, reports emerged of renewed recruitment and forced mobilization in Tigray, a direct violation of the Pretoria Agreement.
Who's affected
TPLF representative Amanuel Assefa said the movement was again in a state of open war with the government. The fighting affected the Tigray, Amhara and Afar regions. The alliance that announced its intention to overthrow the government included the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army and four other movements.
