Among the dead were at least seven security personnel, and among the wounded, 20. The group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack.
Days earlier, Pakistan carried out airstrikes on Taliban targets in the Afghan provinces of Kandahar, Paktia and Khost; Pakistani military officials said 10 targets were hit. The strikes followed an attack on a police facility in Pakistan on September 18 that killed at least 31 people. The Taliban reported that four civilians were killed and promised an "appropriate response".
On Friday, Pakistani security forces reported killing several Afghan Taliban militants in a gunfight in the Gulistan area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border; no official confirmation came from either government.
