What happened
Saudi Arabia on Friday halted the East-West Pipeline after drone attacks launched from Iraq. The kingdom's foreign ministry said the pipeline was attacked by several drones in the Riyadh and Medina areas, causing casualties and material damage. American officials told CNN that the strikes hit pumping stations, and satellite imagery showed fires and thick black smoke near Al-Mesbaa and Al-Dekra.
Why it matters
According to Capital Economics, the halt could remove up to 4% of global oil supply from the market. On Monday, Brent and WTI crude oil rose more than 3% — to $108 and $103 per barrel, respectively. Saudi oil exports to Asia fell by roughly half — from 3 million barrels per day to 1.5 million. Buyers and traders said the port of Yanbu has enough stockpiles for only five to seven days of imports if the pipeline is not restored.
What changed
Earlier, crude oil exports from the port of Yanbu fell 41% from a March peak to 2.39 million barrels per day in June. On September 7, the 400,000-barrel-per-day Saudi Aramco refinery in Jizan was attacked. Analysts warned that threats to oil tankers in the Middle East had reached the highest level since the start of the war with Iran.
