IDScan confirmed leak of 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver's licenses; FBI is investigating
Louisiana-based IDScan confirmed that hackers gained access to scans of more than 153 million driver's licenses of U.S. and Canadian citizens on its cloud platform. The FBI confirmed it is investigating reports that the data was being sold on the dark web, and researcher Brian Krebs found his own driver's license in the leak. The incident could become one of the largest leaks of government-issued identity documents in North America.

The FBI's New Orleans field office opened an investigation in early September, and the FBI confirmed it is investigating reports that millions of driver's licenses issued in the U.S. and Canada were being sold on the dark web.
What changed
Previously, the Nexus service claimed to have more than 153 million driver's license records from the U.S. and Canada and was advertised on the Exploit forum on August 31. Now IDScan confirmed that hackers gained access to customer data on its cloud platform, and the FBI confirmed the investigation.
Who's affected
Among those affected is U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, whose driver's license is contained in the database. Data on high-ranking individuals, including judges, lawmakers, and corporate executives, has been exposed.
