Ukrainian drones attacked Russian oil refineries: fires in Kirishi, Yaroslavl and Afipsky

In the last week of August, Ukrainian drones struck several oil refineries in Russia. A fire broke out in an industrial zone in Kirishi, one person died in Yaroslavl, and two died in Afipsky. Emergency services are working at the sites.

What happened
A fire broke out in the industrial zone of the town of Kirishi in Leningrad Oblast on Sunday, 30 August, after an attack by Ukrainian drones. Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko confirmed the fire, and emergency services are working at the scene; 42 drones were shot down over the region overnight. Local residents posted a video of an explosion on the upper floors of a multi-storey apartment building.
On the night of 28 August, the Yaroslavnefteorgsintez oil refinery in Yaroslavl came under attack: one person was killed and 27 were injured, including 10 people wounded when debris fell on an intercity bus. Russia's Defense Ministry reported intercepting 512 drones over 18 regions. On 25 August, drones attacked the Afipsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai: two people were killed and two others were injured. Debris fell on the Afipskaya railway station, at least 10 private houses were damaged, and a fire broke out on the refinery's territory.
Why it matters
The Tyumen refinery, Russia's largest independent oil refinery with a capacity of 9 million tonnes per year, halted processing after a drone attack on 25 July; diesel hydrotreating and gasoline production units were damaged. The Omsk refinery, one of the largest in Russia, is a key fuel supplier for Kyrgyzstan.
