What happened
On August 24, Kyiv hosted a Coalition of the Willing summit. The summit was co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Norway pledged to provide Ukraine with $9 billion next year, matching the record level of 2026.
Why it matters
Zelensky said that Russia is not ready for a ceasefire regarding ships carrying agricultural products in the Black Sea. According to him, Moscow wants any deal to cover strikes on Russian oil refineries and pipelines. He also said he had suggested to several leaders that their vessels be used to carry food from Ukrainian ports without coming under attack.
French President Emmanuel Macron, after a nearly two-hour phone call with Zelensky, agreed to accelerate deliveries of new French equipment to Ukraine. The leaders discussed the shortage of air defense assets; Macron said he was ready to appeal to allies with stockpiles of US-made Patriot interceptors. The Patriot air defense system is the only weapon in Ukraine's arsenal capable of shooting down the high-speed ballistic missiles used by Russia.
What changed
Earlier, on Independence Day, Zelensky had already said that Ukraine wants peace but is not ready to surrender to Russia at any cost. Now he announced a concrete ceasefire plan developed with partners.
