Alimnur Turganbai was sentenced to 2.5 years by a Chinese court after being detained at the border. The trial proceeded without the presence of his family, according to his daughter, Riza Alimnur. She stated that the family has not received any official documents regarding the trial. Radio Azattyk reported that Turganbai is currently held in a prison in Kunes.
Detention Conditions
Riza Alimnur disclosed that her father is forced to work at a sewing factory while in detention. He spends two hours a day learning Chinese, with the rest of his time dedicated to labor. The family is responsible for covering his food expenses in prison. The Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged procedural issues in Turganbai's citizenship renunciation, complicating his release.
