Iran permits Iraq oil transit through Strait of Hormuz amid regional tensions

Iran has authorized Iraq to transport oil through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian military officials. This decision could increase Iraqi oil exports to three million barrels per day. The move comes amid ongoing regional tensions involving the U.S. and Israel.

Iranian Authorization

Iran has lifted restrictions for Iraq, the second-largest oil producer in OPEC, allowing it to transit oil through the Strait of Hormuz. This was announced by an Iranian military spokesperson in a video statement released by the state news agency. The decision is expected to facilitate the movement of up to three million barrels of Iraqi oil per day. However, the practical impact depends on shipping companies' willingness to navigate the strait amid ongoing risks.

Regional Tensions

The decision comes as the region faces heightened tensions due to conflicts involving the U.S. and Israel. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint, previously saw a significant reduction in traffic, affecting global oil and LNG supplies. Iraq and other Gulf producers had to cut production sharply during the initial weeks of the conflict, as storage facilities reached capacity. The current traffic remains below pre-conflict levels, when the strait handled about a fifth of the world's oil and LNG shipments.

What's Next

Shipping schedules are being developed, according to Inbusiness.kz. It remains unclear how the exemption will be implemented and whether it applies to all Iraqi exports.
